Can You Guess the Book from the Emojis?

Hi everyone! I hope you’ve had a good week!

I thought we would try something a little bit different today ๐Ÿ˜‰ All my American friends are always commenting on how Europeans apparently use way too many emojis, but guys: Emojis are awesome! Sometimes you can express so much more through them than you could using just a few words, and I feel like they make a text message sound so much nicer!

Anyways, my siblings, some of my friends, and I have taken the emoji thing one step further. I think it was about five years ago when came up with the idea: Why not translate some of our favorite books into emojis and have the others guess which book we meant? Thus, a WhatsApp group with the very creative name “Smiley-Geschichten ๐Ÿ˜ƒ” (German for “Smiley-Stories”) was born. Though we write less frequently now, that group is still in use, and since I always have so much fun guessing things and coming up with emoji-depictions of books, I thought: Why not try it here?

So, just for you, I’ve tried to summarize a couple of pretty well-known books with emojis. I won’t be telling you which books they are just yet – where would be the fun in that? Instead, I thought you guys could try to guess them in the comments. That way, you can play along and I can see how well I did capturing the stories’ essence ๐Ÿ˜‰ I will eventually (Maybe next week?) follow up on this and reveal the books if no one guesses them, though.

Anyways, I hope you decide to play! And if you want to create your own emoji-stories, please go ahead! So let’s get started!

(Also, can someone tell me why the WordPress versions of these emojis are way uglier than any of the other ones??)

Did you understand any of this? Bring on those guesses!

And if you enjoyed this, let me know, then I might do another one of these posts at some point ๐Ÿ˜‰ Also, did you like the shorter or the long versions more?

[Update: Thanks so much to everyone who participated (whether in the comments or privately) – I hope you had fun! Like I promised, I’ll be revealing the answers now ๐Ÿ˜‰ You already guessed quite a few of them, but, just to give you a complete overview, the books I had in mind are:

  1. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
  2. The Martian by Andy Weir
  3. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling
  4. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
  5. A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare

Do you think I did a good job? Or were these just hopelessly confusing? Feel free to let me know!]

Oh my gosh, such a cute group chat you have! Here are my guesses:

    1. The Hunger Games? I was totally stumped for a minute, and then I was staring at all the bread and went “WAIT I KNOW THIS”

    2. The Martian! I saw the twister and went “Wizard of Oz!” but that immediately didn’t fit the rest of it haha

    3. I’m not sure, I kinda want to say Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them but that doesn’t really make sense does it?

    4. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets maybe?

    5. This one looks so dramatic! Is it Midsummer Night’s Dream?

Wow, you did great on this!! I’d say 3.5/5?
      1. It’s not The Hunger Games, but you’ve got the right series! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m seriously impressed!
      2. Yes! Lol, the twister was the only thing I could find that approximated a Martian sandstorm ๐Ÿ˜‚
      3. That is actually what I was going for! I had to experiment a little because apparently, there aren’t enough Harry Potter emojis out there. So I had to use a rat for the niffler and a caterpillar for Pickett…
      4. This is the only one you didn’t get – I can see why you might think so, though! There are definitely a lot of spiders in that!
      5. Yes! I guess I did make it sound a bit more dramatic than it really is though ๐Ÿ˜

Don’t worry, you’re not alone there! โค๏ธThat’s usually how I feel at first whenever someone posts something new in the emoji group chat ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ But then whenever someone guesses it I feel like “Yeah, that does kind of make sense, why didn’t I get that?” ๐Ÿค” And then it’s a lot of fun going over the emojis again and seeing what aspects of the book the person might have been referring to!
